September 4th – Thursday:
Our last Alaskan port destination was the first city of Alaska, Ketchikan. This port, Vanessa took the Dirt Dune buggy tour and Mom decided to stay on board the ship, while Sandy & I went around the pier where the shops were. We signed up for the Ketchikan City tour, after having lunch on the ship, we got picked up on the dock around 1 PM.

Our guide this time was an Alaskan Native. First stop was the downtown section where Sandy 7 I have already gone around to see, this was a bus tour, then our next stop was the Ketchikan Salmon hatchery where they had 2 captive bald eagles, injured in the wild and could no longer fly, the eagles only mate with one partner and the female is the head of the household. I was happy to hear that the eagle population of Alaska is thriving and is no longer in the endangered species list.

In the same tour, we watched the life cycle of salmon, from their birth to their mating. Our Native guide informed us that King and Coho Salmon is common in Ketchikan, not like in Chugach Valley, only the pacific Red Salmon migrate there. Both the King and Coho breeds in Ketchikan, every hatched and farm raised salmon from the hatchery comes back to the hatchery to mate and die, along the side of the hatchery were concrete water runway they call fish ladder, this leads to the Ketchikan river, and if you watch the ladder, you can see salmon going up these ladders, when we watched the river, it was packed with Silver black King salmon and Coho dark brown just trailing each other.

Ketchikan is known as the Salmon capital of Alaska, it is also the fifth most populated area with 7,368 citizens. Next in the tour was the Totem Heritage Center where over 100 19th century totem poles were collected from abandoned villages. The center protect the poles while providing present day artisan the opportunity to study the traditional art forms from the different native tribes.

Then we proceeded to the Green Park Totem Village Center, a tourist village where all the totem poles displayed were carved by one of the three Female master totem carvers. Her distinctive art form displays the human form in the totem poles, unlike other poles, the village displays her finished look, and painted poles very similar to Canadian totem poles.

We finished the tour and headed back to the ship at around boarding time at 4:30PM.

September 5th – Friday
ALL DAY AT SEA: After we visited our last port, we sailed on down to Vancouver, the sailing was very uneventful but lots of activities on the ship, they had champagne glass displays, wine tasting, fruit carvings and art auctions on our last day. They also had a big on-board sale of all souvenirs and jewelries at very good prices tax free. The last day was helping everyone unwind from the rigorous excitement of the trip. We went to see our last Show another musical extravaganza. We also had to pack our suitcases to be picked up for disembarkation in Vancouver.

September 6th – Saturday
ARRIVAL IN VANCOUVER, CANADA: As we docked at around 6 AM, the passengers all started to wait at the Lido Deck, while we waited for our turn to disembark, the process was very efficient and pleasant.

As we got on the port, we went to a City Tour Company and went on a sightseeing tour in and around Vancouver.
