September 1st – Monday - 2008:
Glacier Bay National Park – the marine wilderness of Glacier National Park includes tidewater glaciers, snow capped mountain ranges, ocean coastlines, deep Fjords, Rivers and freshwater lakes. In the year 1750, the Muir Glacier thousand of feet thick filled what is now a 65 mile long Fjord. This glacier retreat has exposed a host of marine and terrestrial life. The park covers 5, 130 miles of wilderness, there no roads to the park and is only accessible by air, despite the lack of roads, there are over 300,000 visitors each year.
We started the day with breakfast at 9AM at the Lido Deck, for those who have never cruised before, this is the place that serves meals 24/7. Then we found a spot by the pool area we thought we might have a good vantage view of the glaciers we were expecting to see later on the day, remember, we had to go through 65 miles of inlet to get to the receding glaciers. As we bundled up and as we went deeper into the inlet, we saw several dolphins and seals just swimming along the ship putting a show for everyone. Around 2 PM, we got really cold, and Mom said she was very cold, we moved indoors to the Lido deck again and was lucky enough to find an empty table by the window. We sat and ate snacks while waiting for the big reveal, The Margerie Glacier, high up the mountain top, bluish and glistening silver white majestically came into view.
As we approached the inlet end, the more grandeur Johns Hopkins Glacier began to appear, every side of the ship would have a good view of this glacier because the ship has to turn around to head back out to open sea.
As we turned the inlet, we saw seals and walruses basking in the sun lounging on glacier slabs, frolicking around in their natural habitat. There was a mass of slabs of glaciers throughout the inlet and it reminded me of a movie scene, truly a sight to behold.
This cruise seems like it mostly R&R for older passengers, we had 5 children on board and there’s not much rock bands or night dancing in the clubs. I would have preferred more activity as these, but all in all the cruise activities were confined to fine dining, art auctions, shopping sales and just enjoying the vastness of the wilderness and all its beautiful sights to see.
We ate at the same dining table every night and we had the same waiters serving us, they knew all the special requirements we normally asked, this evening was no exception, we had scallops for dinner and flambé Ice cake. After dinner, we went to the Casino where my daughter Vanessa won about $100 and Sandy just even out, while Mom lost her shirt! Finishing the evening with another show stopping performance of two other comics on board even funnier than the first night.
